What Kind of Computer Should I Buy

This article will walk you through the choices you need to make and provide guidance for what to choose.

In order to answer this question properly, you need to decide what type of user you are and what special needs you may have. Additionally, you need to determine how much you want to spend and whether you would consider buying a used or refurbished computer.

General Guidelines

As a general rule, my opinion is that one should get the most computer that they can afford without getting the actual top of the line.

Computer technology changes rapidly and today's super fast and capable computer rapidly becomes outdated. Unless you are interested in swapping your computer frequently, getting a very capable current computer should hold you for at least a few years.

The very top of the line computer demands a premium in price that is generally not worth it and one level below has at least 95% of the capability of the top.

If your budget doesn't allow for this solution, you need to be aware of the tradeoffs in various choices that you will have to make.

Computer type selection

You should first decide if you want a laptop or desktop computer. I've discussed the issues at length in my article entitled Desktop or Laptop? The main question is if you have the need to be mobile even though your computer will cost more and possibly have less capability.

Depending on one's finances, you may opt for used computer or for a blowout special. Great savings can be achieved by taking this route.

However, used computers present support challenges and the risk of early breakdown. Low priced bargain computers may be limited in ultimate capability and need to be carefully evaluated. I hope to discuss these options in greater detail in a future article.

Heavy duty 3D gaming is a whole new world and generally pushes current computer technology to the limits with top of the line powerful and expensive units and is out of the scope of this article.

Component choices

1. Processor

If money is not a pressing issue, single core computers should not be purchased. Dual core processors are more powerful and, for most users, any dual core processor based computer should suffice for standard activities such as word processing, email, browsing the web, watching DVD's, doing one's finances and the vast majority of other tasks.

If you need to do heavy database querying, complicated mathematical computations and number crunching or heavy encryption, you should get one of the higher end processors.

2. Operating system

Assuming a Windows PC, the choices are between XP and Vista. Vista Service Pack 1 (a set of fixes to the known problems of the operating system) has not yet been officially released and the first service pack usually makes a big difference. My opinion is that if there is a choice, Vista should be avoided until SP1 is officially released.

If you are very familiar with XP and don't want to struggle with learning a new operating system or you have a program that is not supported on Vista yet, XP can do everything you need and you can request it worry free if your vendor allows for this option.

If you select Vista, at a minimum you should not get Vista Home Basic but rather select Vista Home Premium. For maximum OS power, Vista Ultimate should be chosen. The detailed options for Vista are outlined in my article Which Vista should I Use?

3. Monitor

A 17 inch monitor is probably the smallest that you should settle for. You can select larger ones if you so desire. Some monitors come with built in speakers if that suits your needs. If you want your computer to double as an entertainment center, you should consider purchasing a high definition or plasma monitor. Dell has an excellent summary of their choices here

4. Memory

The most crucial factor in terms of computer performance is the amount of memory. When you buy computer memory, a minimum of a gigabyte of high speed memory should be selected to support today's demanding operating systems and programs. 2 gigabytes would be even better.

If one is engaged in heavy duty graphics such as CAD (Computer Aided Design) or 3D gaming, or if one is doing heavy database access or number crunching, even more memory should be added.

5. Hard Drive Size

Major manufacturers are offering drives with 250 Gigabytes of storage on their lowest end computers. This should be more than enough for most users.

6. CD and DVD burner

Drives that read and write to CDs and DVDs are cheap and you should specify read and write for both. Don't accept CD read/write and DVD read only.

Blue Ray and HD DVD disks can hold up to 50 gigabytes but the drives needed to use them are much more expensive than standard DVD drives. Standard DVD drives will run around while Blue Ray will cost around 0.

7. Video card

The type of card that you get depends on the type of activities that you are planning;

1. Basic user - word processing, internet browsing, email and DVD movies

The basic level card will suffice for this. It should have at least 128MB. 2 representative cards are the Nvidia 7300GT and ATI 1300XT.

2. Vista Aero User or light gaming, rich media, and general entertainment

This capability requires mid level graphics power and a card with at least 256 MB of its own internal memory should be purchased. A sample card would be ATI HD2600XT

3. Edit and view photographs in brilliant color

A mid level card should be used for this. One example is the NVidia 8600GT, All cards from this level and up should have at least 256 MB.

4. Playback HD quality content

The card should have HDMI outputs to attach to external displays. 2 possibilities are Nvidia 8600gt or ATI HD2600XT.

5. 3D accelerated games in high definition player, CAD (Computer Aided Design), video editing or high level graphic design

3D gaming makes the greatest demands on the computer's video systems and the sky is the limit here. In general, the highest level card that your system will accept will provide the most satisfying experience.

8. Sound and Speakers

The standard sound card offered by most manufacturers is fine. If you have special requirements, the major dealers describe the advantages of the various upgrade offerings.

Speakers project the sound of your computer. Better speakers provide subwoofers and different levels of surround sound.

9. Keyboard and mouse

Connected or wireless versions are offered. Be sure to get an optical mouse. They are much more reliable than a trackball mouse.

10. Media reader

These are usually listed as 15 in 1 or 13 in 1 card or media reader. This device allows you to directly get data off of a number of devices such as digital cameras, personal digital assistants (PDAs) and others.

11. Modem

If you want to send or receive faxes or connect to the internet via a phone line where high speed internet may not be available, you will need a modem.

12. Wireless network

If you plan to connect to a wireless network, you will need a wireless network card in your computer. Standard network cards are built in.

Since Desktop Publishing (DTP) came out in the eighties, graphic designers have been utilizing computer technology. This has pushed all graphic designers to become competent with computer hardware at the very least.

What is Desktop Publishing (DTP)? In the 1980s, it was a common term applied to digital publishing systems. These systems were developed to replace large, pre-press, specialist design and compositing systems.

LED TV - Don't Be Fooled, Understand the Technology First

Thinking of buying an LED TV, well....Stop! Before you spend in excess of 00, you need to cut through the jargon and hype to truly understand the technology that you're actually spending your hard earned money on. TV manufacturers and the media are very good at convincing us that the latest products incorporate the most cutting edge technology and are a must have. Lets get real here, to the average consumer most of this jargon is just down right confusing.

A new range of LED TVs that have hit the market with a big buzz. Samsung have crept through the backdoor and have released the 7000 series range boasting LED technology.

That's great...but what is this LED technology thats being boasted?

Current LED TVs - The Truth The term 'LED' stands for Light Emitting Diode and as you may well know LEDs are used in many of our devices at present, however in terms of the current line of LED TVs, the actual LEDs are used for the backlight of the TV ONLY and not the TV display themselves. If you consider that current TV technology uses CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorecent Lamps), there is no doubt that an LED backlight is a more efficient form of backlight.

However, the important point here is that the LED television's display is actually LCD (Liquid Crystal Display), it is the backlight only that is made up of LEDs. So there are two major technologies at use here; LCD for the display and LED for the backlight. In essence a more advanced form of LCD TV.

When you compare this technology to a true LED display TV. Displays such as OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) will self illuminate, utilizing an internal thin layer of LED for its display only.

The fact that the 'LED TV' term has been used to describe a type of LCD TV is a cunning move on Samsungs part, but genius in terms of marketing, since it capitalises on the current buzz in the TV market of true LED display TVs such as Sony's XEL-1 OLED TV.

LCD TVs with LED Backlights - The Improvements Now that we've established that this is LCD TV with an LED backlight, lets look at how this new range of TV improves on current TV technology such as plasma and standard LCD in 3 key areas:

1. Picture Quality Quite simply, the picture quality has been improved over standard LCD and Plasma, because the range of colours have increased. The utilization of Light Emitting Diodes as a light source instead of traditional lamps provides a higher contrast ratio because the LED produces blacker blacks and whiter whites, this is the key to achieving quality images on screen.

2. Environment LED Technology consumes less power than current backlight TV technology, making a saving on your energy bills.

3. Slimmer Models. Since no provision for a conventional light source is required, LED TVs can be made ultra thin, this makes for a thin, sleek, more attractive model.

Decisions, Decisions If you are in the market for a TV now and want a picture quality in advance of current standard LCD and Plasma ranges on the market, then you cannot go far wrong with an LED TV.

However, if you are in no hurray to purchase a television at this present time and require a TV with technology that will keep it at the forefront of cutting edge, in terms of LED technology, OLED TV is the real deal. Laser TV is another option to explore.

Both are emerging technologies and require patience as they find their place in the market with the correct size screens for your home. These TVs may also require you to dig a little deeper into your bank balance.

The moral of the story is to understand the technology behind the product in great detail before you part with your money, the choice is yours.

Best Student Laptops - Choosing The Best Laptop For College Students

Going to college and you find yourself in need of a student laptop? Student laptops tend to vary a whole lot from cheap ones to really cool quad core ones (a.k.a. not so cheap ones). Finding the best student laptops isn't always an easy task. One thing to take into consideration would be what the laptop will be used for. If it will just be an accessory used to check mail, watch movies and surf the web, then those don't go that high on the price range and you could probably get away with a 400$ model. But, if the student in question will be needing a laptop to work with, or demands power from the laptop, the price can go quite high sometimes.

Depending on what area of studies the laptop will be used for, there are a few factors that need your consideration.

Best 13 Inch Laptop

A laptop for someone who attends some form of social studies will mainly be used for writing papers, creating PowerPoint presentations and spreadsheets. These are the average laptops which you can find almost anywhere. They don't require a lot of horsepower to run simple programs such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint or Excel.

If the student attends classes which require graphics work or design, then a high end laptop might be needed. If it's graphic design, then a laptop with more than one CPU core, about 3GB or RAM minimum and a decent dedicated graphic card will be needed for things to run smooth. If there's architecture involved or complex 3D rendering, then, again, some powerful CPU, a minimum of 2GB or RAM and a more than decent graphics card that's able to display a quality rendering to the very last pixel will be needed.

Another type of student laptop would be the one that is used for gaming. These laptops, like the previously mentioned ones, can go quite a lot up on the price scale, since the newest generation of games demands quite a lot from the whole computing system. A nice start is a dual core processor, with 2 GB of RAM and some of the newer models of the nVidia or ATI dedicated graphics cards. Some of the newest laptop models even feature two graphics cards in SLI configuration for ultimate graphics performance!

Before going on and purchasing the student laptop, you really have to ask yourself what it will be used for.

Portability is another issue to take into account. You don't want a bulky laptop that's extremely heavy to carry around from class to class. Its size should also be taken into consideration, since you really don't need a 21 inch screen laptop to get a paper done.

Also, the size of the laptop should also be determined by the size of the student also. If the student is of a shorter statute, then a smaller laptop would be recommended.

Baseball players or jocks could probably fit a whole 21 inch screen laptop in their bags and won't even perceive the thing as an obstacle.

Since college is a also a huge social experience, the looks of the laptops should also be considered. If you are going to study business, or marketing, then you should go with a classic black model laptop that goes with a suit.

If you are going to study art or design, then the laptop case could have the whole color palette on it for all you care. Choose something that goes with the type of person you are and the type of classes you attend.

The problem most people find themselves stuck in when choosing a student laptop is the lack of variety to choose from. Stores don't carry quite a lot of options when it comes to laptops, so you might have to be a bit more patient in your searches. For a store to carry more than a small selection of laptops, it would have to be quite a giant in the IT niche. This is where the internet comes into play, since you can compare several laptops from mega-sellers such as Amazon and choose the perfect student laptop based on your needs.

Before you jump in and purchase a laptop, you should review a few basic features for the best student laptop you should buy:

CPU - Laptop Processor

Laptop processor can vary quite a lot in speed terms, so you need to carefully choose when deciding what you should go with. A single core processor can handle quite a few tasks, such as web browsing; email access, IM chatting, movie watching and other low processing power applications. You could easily write your paper on one of these and would be happy with it.

Hard drive space- Laptop HDD

This is one difficult choice. There are people who use the basic applications they get with the laptop and don't require to store anything else on it. Then again, there are media freaks who tend to store up on everything, so they require something similar to a central library when it comes to storage space. You should start with a standard computer HDD, of 100GB, if you don't intend to store too much on it, and should go up to 500 GB if you intend to manically save everything you encounter on a daily basis.

RAM - Laptop System RAM

This, along with the processor, is the most important aspect you should look for in a laptop. Think of it this way, the more RAM you have, the faster the laptop will run, the more applications you can have open at a single time and the more work can you do in the least possible time. The less RAM you have...well... you will have to figure out how to tweak your system for best performance to go with a low RAM specification laptop.

Optical Drives

Do you intend to use your laptop as a multimedia player? Most students do, so choose a laptop that comes with an optical drive - a standard DVD burner should do just fine for starters. But if you really have a big spending budget, then choose a laptop with a Blu-Ray burner. This can ensure you could write up to 50 GB of data to a dual layer Blu-ray disk.

Wireless Connectivity

When choosing a student laptop, make sure you choose one with wireless connectivity. This is because you won't know what sort of internet connection you run across on a college campus, so a wireless connection assures you will have internet access where there's no wired connectivity.

There are of course countless small things and perks you should be looking for a in a student laptop. But keep in mind the essential features when choosing the best student laptop and all the small upgrades and perks can come at a later time!
