Laptops are miniature computers designed primarily for mobile use. They are also structured to consume less power. Equipped with liquid crystal displays, most of them use different memory models for their random access memory (RAM). In addition to an inbuilt key board they utilize touch pad (a.k.a track pad) or pointing stick for input, through an external key board or mouse that can be attached. The Laptops were invented when users felt a need to have full featured computers that could be used anywhere. Their predecessors were called "Luggable", heavy storage instruments.
The transition to LCD and plasma displays allowed "luggable" to shrink in size. They also had internal batteries added to them. The laptops run on a single main battery. This battery can be connected to the main power source through an AC/DC adaptor. This power can not only charge the battery but also run the laptop. The battery supplies power to the laptop when there is power failure. Many components of the laptop are similar to the desk tops in structure and functions. The introduction of other conveniences like battery technology paved the way for more sophisticated and sleek portable systems.

The hand disks are physically smaller compared to the standard desk-tops. They are marked by lower performance and low power consumption. The video and sound chips are usually integrated. The higher end laptops have dedicated graphic processors which enables them to have less performance than their desktop counterparts.
The laptop specific processors available are powered by lithium batteries which, in turn use lithium polymer technology. The battery has a life of 2 to 5 hours on light duty and may need to be replaced in about 5 years depending on charging and discharging systems. Docking Systems offer storage bags, one to three expansion slots and host of connections. All new laptops can be powered by external AC converters which may increase the weight. The Touch pad is used to control the position of cursor on the screen which is sensitive to touch.
Disadvantages relate to compatibility problems mostly. Each company has its own connectivity system. There are no uniform standards all over the world. Some parts like mother boards, keyboards are interchangeable with in the manufacturer's brand.
